Aditya Shirodkar worked with the HEP Cloud project team during the summer of 2016 at Fermilab. We had him focus on financial and security monitoring issues of our Amazon Web Services deployment. He was charged with detecting unauthorized usage, finding disconnected instances that weren't being used, and several other failure modes. He completed his work in a timely manner, worked independently, and was able to figure several complicated Amazon technologies out without help. The experience he gained with us, coupled with his extensive programming knowledge and the AWS experience he already had, would make him an asset to anyone doing cloud-based distributed computing and Big Data.

Aditya has been working at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) as an intern for 9 weeks in the summer 2016 on the High-Energy Physics (HEP) Cloud Facility project. The project aims at integrating a diverse set of remote resources, including Grids, Clouds, and High-Performance Computers, to address the peak computational needs of the HEP community.

Aditya has provided two major contributions:
(1) the development of monitoring probes for the integration of the Google Compute Engine (GCE) with HEP Cloud; he has done that by adapting the monitoring infrastructure that we had developed for AWS, providing similar functionalities, using the GCE and HEP Cloud API;
(2) the development of a set of critical security controls to lower the operational risk of the infrastructure for bursting to AWS and GCE, using mainly python and shell scripting.

Aditya has hit the ground running, providing rapid cycles of prototypes with incremental functionality. He has interfaced well with the rest of the team, gaining good knowledge of the internals of the HEP Cloud system and providing a successful integration of his work. He was particularly independent, showing good judgement on when to escalate stumbling blocks to get things moving.
I highly recommend Aditya for a position in software engineering.
